Bomet County has launched stringent traffic measures aimed at restoring orderliness within Bomet Town.
The measure aims to address rampant disorder and safety hazards caused by Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) operating outside designated areas.
County Executive Member (CECM) for administration, Dr. Kipngetich Kirui, emphasized the county's commitment to reducing congestion and ensuring passenger safety along the Bomet-Narok Highway.
Speaking during a pivotal consultative meeting involving PSV Sacco leaders, county security officials, and enforcement officers, Dr. Kirui highlighted the grave risks posed by PSVs picking and dropping passengers at unauthorized points.
These practices, he said not only jeopardize the safety of commuters but also lead to significant traffic disruptions along the busy highway.
"PSVs have been operating recklessly, picking passengers at dangerous spots such as Nyongores Bridge, Tenwek Junction, and even making sudden stops on the highway within Bomet Town," stated Dr. Kirui, underscoring the urgency of enforcing compliance with designated pick-up and drop-off points.
The directives issued by Dr. Kirui mandate that any PSV found operating outside designated terminals will face severe penalties, including hefty fines.
He further directed all PSVs operating within Bomet Town to strictly adhere to boarding and alighting passengers only at the designated Bomet Terminus stage.
In response to the county's directives, leaders of various PSV Saccos pledged their full cooperation and support in ensuring compliance with the new regulations.
They expressed readiness to work closely with County authorities to streamline operations and enhance safety standards within the transport sector.
The measures come amidst growing concern over the unchecked operations of PSVs, which have increasingly contributed to congestion and safety hazards within urban areas.
The County government's proactive position aims not only to enhance commuter safety but also to improve traffic flow and overall urban management in Bomet Town.
