Police in Thika have arrested a prominent businessman after they raided his shop and recovered Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) cables and railway metal bars worth millions of shillings.
Thika West Sub County Police commander Lawrence Muchangi disclosed that acting on a tip off from members of the public, they raided the shop in Thika town where they found several rolls of KPLC steel wire cables, and other electricity installation equipment as well as metal bars.
Muchangi said they have intensified crackdown on a syndicate responsible for the vandalism of KPLC cables and Railways metal bars and warned anyone found that they will be dealt with ruthlessly.
He called on members of the public to be alert and report the criminals so that they can face the law.
"Once you experience power outage, report immediately because you find some people tempering with transformers. This is an act of economic sabotage and will not be tolerated," said Muchangi.
He also put on notice scrap metal dealers telling them to always keep a record of their customers so that once a complaint is raised, it can make it easier to follow up.
The suspect will be arraigned in court on Monday.
