The Legio Maria Church has urged the government to work out ways of easing the tough economic times Kenyans are facing.

The Church’s Vicar-General and Priest in charge of Pap Ndege Parish in Homa Bay County, Stanley Okumu, said spiraling inflation had eroded the purchasing power of majority of Kenyans.

Speaking during a prayer service at Pap Ndege, Okumu said the government should be sensitive to the plight of Kenyans who are languishing in poverty.

“We are urging the government to put measures in place to lower the cost of living. Many Kenyans are not able to put food on their tables due to the economic crisis,” Okumu said.

The clergyman called on Kenyans to embrace peace saying the violence witnessed in the country during demos was unwarranted.

“Let everybody ensure there is peace in the country. We do not want to see destruction of property, injuries and deaths,” Okumu added.

He called for dialogue between opposition leaders and the government to end the mayhem.

The cleric said sticking issues should be resolved amicably to solve problems affecting citizens.

“Let our leaders always embrace dialogue in solving problems which affect Kenyans,” Okumu said.

He urged religious leaders in the country to pray for Kenya so that peace can prevail.

“I appeal to my fellow religious leaders to pray for our country so peace prevails. We don't want a situation where people complain of high cost of living but there is nobody to listen to them,” Okumu said.
