Rev. William Nyaima Puot of the Church of Christ Dala Hera Kisumu under the umbrella of National Council of Churches of Kenya NCCK has called on Kenyans and the leaders to respect the Constitution of Kenya 2010.
Rev. Puot noted with misgivings that sections of the Constitution especially as regarding the rights of the people have not been adhered to.
“While we celebrate the implementation of the Constitution of Kenya 2010 for the past 13 years, cases of gross violation of human rights of citizens continue to be witnessed in the country. The police and the security agencies have at times been used to suppress the rights of the people with arrests. Heavy crackdown on demonstrators causing death of nearly 100 victims in the hands of police has been witnessed,” decried Puot
Reverend Puot noted that abuse of the constitutional provision by those in power has also betrayed the implementation of the Constitution that is now 13 years old.
“The blatantly disregard of the Constitution has given root to the continued growth of corruption as Chapter Six of the Constitution has just remained on paper,” noted Puot
Puot who passed this message during a church service at Dala Hera reiterated that everybody has an obligation to respect the Constitution of the land.
“All of us as citizens of Kenya have a responsibility individually and collectively to uphold the rule of law because this is the meaning of Article 31 which states that ‘every person has an obligation to respect, uphold and defend the Constitution,” added Puot.
The clergyman encouraged the citizens of Kenya to read and familiarize themselves with the contents of the Constitution of Kenyan 2010 to enable them actively participate in the numerous constitutional public engagement forums.
“In this regard, we urge you as citizens of Kenya to familiarize yourself with the Constitution of Kenya 2010 so that you have a broad understanding of your rights because you cannot seek what you do not know you deserve, so participate in various forums and let your opinions and desires known. Do not let others make decisions that affect your life,” pleaded Rev. Puot.
He further encouraged the citizenry to condemn acts contrary to or that do violate the Constitution including acts of bribery.
