The county government of Homa Bay has begun roll out of vaccination on cattle against anthrax and black quarter diseases.

The programme taking place in the whole county is this week being carried out in four centres in Rachuonyo East Sub County.

Area Veterinary Officer Davies Agwa said the vaccination will kick off today May 24th at Kodada centre in Kabondo East ward.

He has urged residents to avail their animals to receive the vaccine offered for free.
The other centres he said will be Nyasore, Kabondo West on May 25, 2023, Omiro centre in Kokwanyo, Kakello ward on May 29 and finally Apondo centre in Kojwach ward on May 30.

“We target to vaccinate about 20,000 animals,” the officer said, adding “we will upscale the programme progressively.”

Mr Agwa said there is an outbreak of anthrax and black quarter diseases in certain parts of the county and the government wants to ensure the animals and people are safe.

The officer however said the most common disease currently is the black quarter which especially affects cattle. “We will not be vaccinating sheep and goats,” he said.
