Crackdown on fake garbage collection companies commences in Mombasa

Mombasa Deputy Governor Francis Thoya has rolled out a county-wide crackdown targeting garbage collection companies operating illegally.

Thoya who also doubles up as the County Executive in charge of Environment said the laws are clear on waste management, adding that companies should adhere to the same.

“If one wants to engage in the garbage collection business he must have relevant documents. One of the documents is a permit to transport the garbage,” said the DG when he led the exercise in Kisauni Sub-County.

The exercise will involve the authentication of documents. “So far we have impounded four trucks mostly from private companies with fake documents. If you examine the signature it’s a forgery, in each of the companies the county government lost not less than Sh40, 000 because the permits range between Sh40, 000 to Sh80, 000,” he said.

Admittedly the DG disclosed that some rogue county employees collude with the garbage collection companies to issue fake permits. The DG put on notice the county employees.

“It’s a scandal that I have been aware of for long, I have done my investigations. Companies with fake permits should return them to the people who issued them because a crackdown has started,” said Thoya.

When they took over the reins of power in the Coastal city last year, DG Thoya ordered the closure of all illegal dumping sites in a bid to keep the city clean.
