The East African Breweries Limited (EABL) on Thursday launched this year’s sustainability report themed ‘Accelerating to a Low Carbon World.’

The move is aimed to reaffirm the company’s commitment to decarbonizing its operations and partnering to halve the carbon across the EABL supply chain.

Speaking during the forum, Ministry of Environment and Forestry Cabinet Secretary (CS) Soipan Tuya commended the move by EABL saying that it was a good example to set. Aligning it with the just concluded African Climate Summit, she said it was time for action.

“You are showing the path to business sustainability in a way that demonstrates profitability and environmental stewardship are indeed mutually inclusive,” said Tuya.

EABL Group Managing Director and CEO Ms. Jane Karuku while launching the report revealed that as a company they are championing positive drinking by increasing the number of people reached with moderation messages across the East African market.

The company has also made progress in championing inclusion and diversity by increasing the number of women in leadership and the number of women and youth benefiting from their programs.

“EABL is committed to preserving water catchment areas and water recycling through water replenishment efforts in communities where EABL operates and improved water efficiency at their plants,” Said Karuku.

Karuku reported on the company’s efforts in fencing water catchment areas and the company’s commitment to working with associated sorghum farmers in water supply and general education about trees to ensure a higher tree survival rate.

She further added that the move to rollout biomass projects in Kenya and Uganda had seen a subsequent reduction in carbon emissions.

Karuku was happy to note that EABL was running a sustainable glass Spirits business that had completely shifted from a way to a Returnable Glass Model.

In a panel discussion held during the launch, The Standard Chartered Bank CEO, Mr. Kariuki Ngari remarked on the move and assured the Bank’s continued support in environmental stewardship by working together to achieve sustainability in finance, community, and operations.

Though Africa is not a key player in environmental pollution, it has the solution to reverse and control the effects already witnessed by climate change.

With Africa’s economy, being the fastest growing in the globe, it has the capacity to ensure green industrial development. DRC for example has 30% of the global cobalt mineral deposits critical in green industrialisation.
