Eric Omondi charged for creating disturbance

Comedian turned activist Eric Omondi was on Monday arraigned before the Milimani Law Courts in Nairobi, and charged for an offense reportedly committed in June, 2024.
The Court, before Milimani Principal Magistrate Ben Mark Ekhubi was told that Omondi in the company of others not in Court poured Sukuma wiki (kales) along Parliament Road on June 04, with a view of creating disturbance and a breach of peace.
He was in the company of several women, who were protesting against the Finance Bill, 2024. He denied the charges and was released on a Sh5, 000 cash bail.
"You don't need to keep somebody in custody for the whole weekend for a misdemeanor,” the magistrate ruled while granting the bail.
The case will be mentioned on December 4, 2024. Omondi was arrested on Friday last week at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) as he attempted to board a flight to Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania.
“I have been arrested at JKIA just before I boarded a flight to Dar-es-Salaam,” he shared in a post on social media.
“As the brand ambassador for Skyward Airline, we were launching the inaugural Dar-es-Salaam flight. Upon handing over my passport, the immigration officers informed me that there is a stop order and that I cannot travel, and that I have to be detained,” he added.
Omondi was among activists credited for staging protests against the Finance Bill, 2024. The Bill was ultimately withdrawn by President William Ruto’s administration.
