The National Agricultural and Rural Inclusive Growth Project (NARIGP) in collaboration with the Narok county government has distributed over 13,000 certified avocado tree seedlings to local farmers.

Speaking at the County offices during the flagging off of the seedlings, the County Executive Committee (CEC) member in charge of agriculture and livestock, Ms. Joyce Keshe, said the trees will help to conserve the environment.

“In the spirit of conserving the environment, we encourage farmers to go for high value tree seedlings that will help in soil conservation especially in water catchment areas,” she said.

Keshe said the farmers who will benefit from the program are from Ilmotiok, Olmaasani and Kimintet ward in Narok County.

The county executive said avocado tree seedlings will help farmers to improve food security in the county and generate income to improve their livelihood.

The CEC said that farmers will find a market for their produce within the country as the avocado oil extraction project was recently commissioned at the Kisii Agricultural Training Center (ATC) in Kisii County.

Keshe urged the farmers, while planting trees during this rainy season, to go for high value tree seedlings such as Avocados and other fruits.

The CEC committed to help farmers to plant and nurture the avocado seedlings as well as marketing the produce both locally and abroad.

“This is one way of fulfilling president Dr. William Ruto’s directive of planting 15 billion tree cover in ten years so as to help combat the effects of climate change that led to calamities such as droughts in the country.
