Kiharu Member of Parliament Ndindi Nyoro has stated that Meru County Governor and Devolution Empowerment Party leader Kiraitu Murungi was threatened and intimidated into joining the Azimio la Umoja Coalition. Speaking during an interview with K24 on Tuesday, April 12, 2022, the lawmaker claimed that the governor was summoned to State House Nairobi by President Uhuru Kenyatta and was threatened with prosecution over alleged involvement in the multi-billion Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (KEMSA) scandal. Nyoro revealed that Kiraitu and his party had negotiated and reached an agreement to work with Deputy President William Ruto ahead of the August 9, General Election. "What we have witnessed is that we have a coalition of people being blackmailed and being threatened to support a candidate who a majority of them do not believe in. Nyoro added he was ready to provide evidence over the same in the event that the governor denies the claims. "He can come out and deny and I will show the evidence for this. It is out there. Most of the leaders have been blackmailed and in the coming weeks to shall see more people saying enough is enough," he stated. The lawmaker added that a number of politicians in the country have expressed interest in joining the Kenya Kwanza Alliance even as parties continue to forge coalitions. Nyoro's sentiments come after Tharaka Nithi Senator, Kithure Kindiki, disclosed that the coalition had held several talks with Governor Kiraitu and he had agreed to join the coalition. The Senator stated that they were stunned by the governor's move to join Azimio. "We have spoken to him (Kiraitu) for more than six months, showing him that the ground, and Meru in particular, was with Ruto. However, towards the end, he joined Azimio. Is it the people who sent him there?" "So, my brother, I'm sorry but the ground has spoken. The next Meru governor will be Mithika Linturi," the Senator stated.
