James Tembur appointed new NYS boss
By Peter Ochieng
The National Youth Service (NYS) now has a substantive Director General (DG).
The new sheriff in town is James Kipsiele Tembur.
President William Ruto appointed him through a gazette notice dated 19th December, 2023.
He will hold the position for three years, effective 20th December, 2023.
"In exercise of the powers conferred by section 16 (1) of the National Youth Service Act, 1, William Samoei Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces, appoint—James Kipsiele Tembur to be the Director-General of the National Youth Service, for three (3) years," reads the notice.
Until his appointment, Tembur was serving as NYS deputy Director General.
He has however served as DG albeit in an acting capacity for over 6 months.
Tembur replaces Matilda Sakwa, whose tour of duty at NYS ended in April, 2023.
In November, NYS shortlisted five candidates for the position of NYS Director General and Chief Executive Officer (CEO).
Tembur was among those shortlisted. Others were; Njiri Nelson Mugweru, Anjere Alfred Tom, Nakitari Humphrey Okuku and Mbaruku Moses Njeru.
Interviews were conducted on 4th December, 2023 at the NYS headquarters.
