Some 35 persons living with disability in Narok County have a reason to smile after a non-governmental organization gave them wheelchairs to enhance their movement.
Rani Ramchandani Initiative in partnership with Tenwek Hospital also donated sanitary pads to adolescent girls living with disability in the county.
Speaking after distributing the donation at William Ole Ntimama stadium, Rani Ramchandani Initiative Founder Rani Ramchandani said they are moving around the country to reach out to the persons with disability who need the wheelchair.
“We will donate over 600 wheelchairs across the county. We are moving around helping persons living with disability so that they can live comfortable lives,” he said.
Narok Chief Executive Committee (CEC) member in charge of Road, transport, and public works John Gatua asked residents not to hide persons with disability but challenged them to expose them so that they can benefit from the help given by the government and well-wishers.
Gatua revealed that the county government will soon waive the fees paid by persons with disability at government health facilities to enable them to access quality medication from the facilities of their choice.
On his part, Chebon Silongi, who is in charge of Persons with Disability at Tenwek Hospital advised parents and guardians of physically challenged persons to take their children to the hospital regularly for medical checkups.
“Regular check-ups will help them live a healthy life and in case of any challenge, they will be advised accordingly and early enough,” he said.
Samuel Zakari, a parent of a child with a disability, who benefited from the program, thanked the initiative for the donation saying it was a big relief to his family.
“Transporting my son from one point to another was very hectic. We could not afford to buy a wheelchair. With the donation, our son will be able to move comfortably on his own,” he said.
He encouraged all parents and guardians of physically challenged persons to register them with the National Council of Persons with Disability (NCPWD) to benefit from government support.
