Residents of Kalokol who have for a long time grappled with water shortage have a reason to smile following the launch of a project aimed at providing sustainable management and access to water and sanitation.
Deputy Governor Dr. John Erus on Wednesday launched the Sustainable Management and Access to Water and Sanitation in the ASALs Programme (SWASAP) which is funded by the Water Sector Trust Fund/Danida and implemented by Practical Action in collaboration with the Turkana County Government.
Erus said the program aims at improving integrated water resources management, increasing access to sustainable water services, providing sustainable sanitation and improving governance and management of available water resources.
The main objective of the project is to protect the lives and livelihoods of climate-vulnerable individuals and families in Kalokol.
“The launch of the SWASAP program is a significant step towards providing sustainable water and sanitation services to the people of Kalokol. The involvement of various stakeholders, including development partners and government officials, is a positive sign of cooperation and commitment towards delivering quality services,” the DG said.
At the same time, he revealed that the county government has allocated Sh720 million towards Lake Turkana Blue Economy.
He also urged institutions like Kenya Maritime that deals with fisheries to support TVETs in training skills related to the blue economy.
During the launch, Acting CEC for Water Services, Peter Akono, emphasized the need to improve sanitation as an area of major concern.
