KCB’s unbeaten run halted, but remain top in FKF Premier League standings
By Robert Mutasi
The latest FKF Premier League standings have an interesting twist, as the unbeaten run of KCB came to an end at the hands of Mathare United in a closely fought match.
Despite the setback, KCB tops the table with 17 points and enjoys a 3-point cushion from second-placed Mara Sugar.
KCB has made a fine start to the season, having won five of their opening eight games, drawing two and losing just one.
The team has been prolific in goal-scoring, being able to score 13 with only four against them.
It is the solidity at the back, combined with a strong offence, that has put them right at the summit, showing clearly that they are serious contenders this season.
Mara Sugar, that is three points adrift of KCB, have also had a good season and will be closing the gap at the top should things go their way, considering they have a game in hand.
Mara Sugar's record stands at four wins, two draws, and a single loss-a record speaking to their consistency and resultant 14 points.
It has scored nine goals while conceding six, a decent record that has kept it within reach of the league leaders.
Kariobangi Sharks are third place with 13 points and are another to make immediate impact into this season. Though less potent in attack, their goal difference is still plus, having scored ten while conceding a respectable six.
Fourth is Mathare United, the team that finally managed to end KCB's unbeaten run, with 11 points.
Having scored only five but conceded eleven, for a negative goal difference, their toughness and upsets in crucial matches have kept them on the top half of the table.
The top five is completed by AFC Leopards, who have amassed 10 points from seven games.
Though it has been a mixed season for them, the balanced goal record of eight goals scored and eight conceded says they are able to hold their own against the cream of the league.
At the tail end of the log, Shabana FC face a stiff challenge while retaining their spot at the bottom of the table with just three points from six games.
Kakamega Homeboyz and Posta Rangers take the other relegation slots, with both sitting at five points apiece. Posta Rangers sit in the relegation playoff, carrying a goal difference of -6 after conceding 10 goals and scoring four.
The season is promising to be very competitive from the look of things in the FKF Premier League.
For a long period, KCB topped the table but is getting fierce competition from Mara Sugar and Kariobangi Sharks as the race to the top is far from over.
Meanwhile, the fight at the bottom of the log is promising to be fierce to the wire as many teams are fighting their lives out for retention in Kenya's premier league.
