Kenya Power reports Nationwide Power Outage

Nairobi,

Friday, 6 September, 2024

McCreadie Andias

The Kenya Power has reported a nationwide power outage affecting several parts except sections of North Rift and Western regions in the morning hours of Friday, 6 September, 2024.

This comes just a week as the country was plunged into darkness following yet another power outage experience on 30 August, 2024 with exception on the Nothern Rift and Western region.

The company has however not adressed the main cause of the recent blackouts while some have gone for hours affecting businesses activities.

Kenyans have been urged to remain patient as the company works to restore normalcy.

The development has sparked outrage from consumers who have criticized the need to have KPLC as the only power supplier in the country.

"Monopoly at it worse. We need some revolutionary change in this sector." A Kenyan stated on KPLC's page.

The power supply company has been conducting a series of system reforms, with the recent one being the Update meter Yako campaign, which lasted for about two months, targeting pre-paid token meter users.

The Campaign ended on Friday last week having reached about 5 million pre-paid token consumers from a target number of about 7 million.

On Thursday, 5 September, 2024 , the Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Energy and Petroleum, Hon. J. Opiyo Wandayi paid an official visit to KPLC's Stima Plaza for an induction session to familiarise himself with key sector stakeholders and activities.

The CS was also briefed of the company's strategic priorities, ongoing initiatives, and plans.

The also visited the National Control Centre for a familiarisation tour.

During the visit, CS Wandayi engaged with KPLC's engineers on strategies to strengthen grid protection and enhance power supply reliability.
