Electricity prices in Kenya set to increase by as much as 16% this month on increased fx and energy charges
This is as the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) raised electricity prices against the backdrop of declining shilling against the US dollar which is currently exchanging at an average rate of KSh 158.3 per dollar.
The regulator hiked the foreign exchange rate fluctuation adjustment charge by 103.7% to a high of KSh 6.46 per unit, up from KSh 3.17. It also raised the energy charge by 8.7% to KSh 4.33 per unit, up from KSh 3.98 last month.
Meanwhile, Kenya Power has spent Sh36.9 billion to clear part of its debt to IPPs.
Power purchase agreements are denominated in foreign currency leaving KPLC to struggle to get the dollars needed.
Kenyans on social media have taken a swipe at Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) following the increase in token prices.
