Kibwezi West MP tables special motion to impeach Gachagua
By Peter Ochieng
It is official.
A notice of a special motion to impeach Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has been tabled in the National Assembly.
The motion was tabled by Kibwezi West Member of Parliament (MP) Eckomas Mutuse Mwengi, who was elected on the Maendeleo Chap Chap Party (MCCP) ticket, led by Labour Cabinet Secretary (CS) Alfred Mutua.
Before tabling the motion, Mutuse met his party leader, who supported the bid to impeach Gachagua, accusing him of playing the tribal card instead of embracing Kenyans from all parts of the country.
“No one sends a postcard to God asking to be born in a certain tribe. As a country, we have to say no to the beating of divisive tribal drums that perpetuate inequality, ethnic tensions and hate. The time has come for Kenyans to say ‘enough is enough.’”
“Stirring an insurrection and violence, enslaving Kenyans with corrupt deals and attempting a coup are despicable actions that no leader should be allowed to get away with. They go against the ethos of what we stand for as the Maendeleo Chap Chap party and as members of the ruling coalition. Kenya deserves better!” Mutua added.
While filing the notice, Mutuse said he has no grudge against Gachagua. “I have no grudge, malice, ill will, or personal vendetta against the Deputy President.”
He said he will demonstrate to Kenyans that Gachagua, the former Mathira MP deserves to be impeached.
“I will demonstrate before this house that Gachagua has committed crimes under section 45(1) Section 46, Section 47A (3), Section 48(1) of the anti-corruption and economic crimes act by using his office to unjustly enrich himself, to acquire within 2 months properties beyond 55.2 billion,” he added.
“During the Presidential debate, Rigathi Gachagua did declare that he was worth Sh800 million. We are aware that he is paid slightly over 1 million meaning that for the last 2 years, the much he could have accumulated justly is about Sh24 million. I will demonstrate before Kenyans that he has properties to himself worth Sh5.2 billion. This is what we call unexplained assets.”
After filing the notice, Members of the House Business Committee retreated for a meeting. National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula who approved the motion, is expected to issue a directive on the way forward at about 5pm, today.
