Kisumu Girls High School which was on Monday closed indefinitely following students’ unrest will now be re-opened on Saturday the 23rd.
Nyanza Director of Education Nelson Sifuna noted that being the third term with the KCSE national examinations just around the corner, it would not augur well for the learners to stay home for a prolonged duration.
“We would want the girls to be back as soon as possible. I’ll want to believe from the 1st interim report the first batch of students will be coming back this Saturday because we would not like our students to stay home for a long period and parents are aware the year is coming to an end hence we will pray that the syllabus is covered before the end of the year and our candidates are ready so there’s no excuse why they should not perform well,” Sifuna pointed out.
He equally noted that investigations are ongoing as to what could have precipitated the protest noting that any teacher that would be found culpable of wanton caning of the learners would face the deserving action given that the government abolished corporal punishment in schools.
“I want to assure parents that we will hear all involved and nobody will be victimized. My office is open and I want to assure you that the quality assurance team will listen to all the voices since corporal punishment is illegal and once it’s proved, then TSC will take action. We will not listen to the principal alone but to everybody because Kisumu is our national school and anything amiss must be corrected,” noted Sifuna.
Sifuna however complimented the girls for behaving with decorum during their protest and desisting from destroying any property.
“I want to really thank the girls because as much as they went on strike, they desisted from destroying any school property because they already know only too well that they are the ones who will shoulder the burden in such instance since any property destroyed is on the shoulder of their parents so the girls were constrained and they respected themselves and did not destroy any property,” hailed Sifuna.
Sifuna at the same time heaved a sigh of relief while noting that no learner sustained any form of injury following the fire that broke out in Kisumu Boys and gutted a dormitory at the institution even as he assured that investigations were underway to establish the cause of the fire.
“Investigations have just commenced and we want to assure the parents that all our 2365 boys were accounted for and that for the 208 whose dormitory was affected, the school got alternative accommodation. The fire started from a store and by the time it had reached the dormitory, quite a number of the students items had been removed from the dormitory and therefore there was not that much damage apart from the beds and the dormitory structure and I want to assure that necessary arrangement have been made to ensure the forthcoming national examinations proceed smoothly,” assured Sifuna.
