The Department of Health in Baringo County has dispatched a consignment of essential drugs and non-pharmaceuticals worth Sh 50 million to health facilities across the county.
County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Health Dr Solomon Sirma speaking when he flagged off the drugs at Baringo County referral hospital in Kabarnet on Monday, said the distribution exercise will take a week and will target 289 health facilities across the 30 wards in the county.
Dr Sirma noted that the move is geared towards enhancing access to health care services especially those in remote areas of the county in order to save on overreliance on Level Five facility at the county headquarters.
He stated that the supply will last for a period of between three to four months upon which more purchases will be made to ensure supply is not interrupted.
“This is just but a start but we shall not back down until we ensure drugs are readily available in all our health facilities,” the Health CEC said.
Dr Sirma accompanied by Chief Officers (CO’s) Dr Winnie Bore (Medical Services) and Evans Ruto (Public Health) added that the department has put in place structures and control measures to ensure that the drugs reach the intended facilities.
“I have instructed the two CO’s to assess the dispatching process across all the health facilities and they will report to me after one month whether the exercise is successful or not,” the County CEC said.
Dr Sirma was referring to a recent scenario where a medical officer and an intern landed in court after being accused of stealing drugs and medical supplies at the county referral hospital.
