Mackenzie preaches in court, denied bail again
By Peter Ochieng
Controversial pastor Paul Mackenzie will remain in police custody for 47 more days.
The Good News International (GNI) church preacher has been in custody since he was arrested in April, 2023, over claims of leading his followers in a 'fast to death.'
Over 400 people died in Shakahola forest, Kilifi county, where the 'fast to death to meet Jesus' took place.
On Thursday, the preacher was back in court for determination of his plea for bail.
Shanzu Senior Principal magistrate Joe Omido dismissed Mackenzie's application.
He ordered the detention of Mackenzie and 27 other co-accused persons for a further 47 days, pending hearing and determination of their bail applications.
The prosecution side welcomed the ruling, adding that the time will be enough to complete investigations.
Before the ruling, Mackenzie who seemed to be preaching said he is looking foward to live with Jesus forever.
"The Holy Spirit is with me, which is why I am so happy. Do you understand me? The biggest sin I am committing right now is eating. One day I shall be saved from the sin of eating, I know I will live with Jesus forever," he said.
During another court session, he said he is facing numerous challenges in detention, alongside other co-accused.
He said they prefer to be killed and "our bodies dumped in River Yala."
