By Julius Tuwei Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang'i has urged Kenyans to shun violence ahead of the much-anticipated August 9, 2022, general elections. Speaking in Nairobi while addressing boda boda operators, the CS appealed to members of the public to embrace peace and harmony. "None of us should rise up against the other just because of elections. We are all Kenyans and we should maintain peace," said Matiang'i. Matiang'i appealed to boda boda operators to observe traffic regulations and adhere to directives set out for them by the Ministry of Transport. The Interior Ministry convened the meeting after a countrywide crackdown that saw several operators arrested. This was after rogue operators attacked a female motorist along Wangari Maathai Road in Nairobi. This prompted action from the government to curb such incidents by weeding out rogue boda boda riders. The government directed players in the sector across the country to reapply for license afresh. Speaking during the event, Matiang'i stated that a section of operators has been used by politicians in the country to stir up violence. The boda boda sector has come under criticism more often than not over reports of recklessness, rogue riders harassing members of the public, aiding in crime, among many other accusations. The Wangari Maathai Road incident was a wake-up call, as Kenyans took to various platforms to condemn the incident while urging the government to crack the whip on the perpetrators.
