Migori County will for the first time participate in the Kenya Youths Inter County Sports (KYIS) event that will take place in Tharaka Nithi county.

Migori County Chief Officer for Education, Youths and Sports Prof. Rose Odhiambo said that the county will participate in all three disciplines in eight editions scheduled from the 23rd to the 30th of April in Tharaka Nithi County.

The selected youths of ages 18 to 23 years will represent the county in Football, basketball and Volleyball.

“This will be our first participation in the KYIS since the tournament interception and we want to perform better to open up opportunities to our talented youths,” said Odhiambo.

The County Executive encouraged the Migori youths to do their best to open up spaces for selection to various national teams to advance their careers and earn a living.

The official noted that youths between the ages of 18 to 23 years were given an opportunity by the Migori interim sports council to participate, adding that the selection was transparent as per the laid down rules and regulations of the Kenya Youths Inter County Sports Association (KYISA).

Migori County Executive Committee Member (CECMs) for Education, Youths, and Sports Dr. Betty Samburu was confident that the selected team in the three disciplines will do better despite participating for the first time.

Samburu said that the county in the future will strive to organise talents at grassroots levels to improve the talents of youths across the county.

She noted that the lack of accredited coaches and enough stadiums were the biggest challenges in addressing and nurturing talents among the youth.

Migori Youths FC is the only football team in the county after Sony Sugar FC was expelled from the Kenya Premier League (KPL) in 2019 due to financial problems.
