Ministry of Environment advocates for sustainable practices in collaboration with private sector

By Robert Mutasi

The Cabinet Secretary for Environment, Climate Change and Forestry, Aden Duale, this morning launched the third Sustainability Report from Bio Food Products Limited.

The event instilled the importance of the Kenyan government and the private sector working together towards sustainable development.

The report, titled "Growing Responsibly, Feeding Sustainably," reflects Bio Food Products' alignment with the strategic priorities of the Ministry.

It showcases the company's commitment to sustainable practices that foster resilience, economic growth, and care for the environment-something increasingly essential as Kenya faces up to the realities of climate change.

Of importance is that Bio Food Products has already introduced the use of color-coded recycling bins, a progressive step in the transition of Kenya from a linear into a circular waste management approach.

The initiative is now being coined by the Ministry to encourage better segregation of waste and its recycling methods in the country.

According to Duale, this is one of the measures that will make the country manage its resources for better sustainability.

The Cabinet Secretary has emphasized that the government is committed to the development of an effective regulatory system through the Environmental Management and Coordination Act and the Kenya National Climate Change Action Plan.

These are policies that ensure industries, including dairy production, are sustainable and contribute towards the realization of national environmental goals.

Duale was accompanied by Mr. Mamo Mamo, the Director General of the National Environment Management Authority, NEMA, who has the responsibility to push the government's anti-pollution campaign throughout the country.

He reiterated this, noting that NEMA was working on strict orders to bring into place regulations that will ensure an environment that is healthy for every Kenyan.

He also touched on noise pollution, where he noted that NEMA would not allow clubs in residential areas unless they were using high-level soundproofing in compliance with environmental regulations.

The aim of this instruction is to safeguard the life quality of residents and fulfill the commitment of this ministry for a balanced coexistence between economic activities and environmental health.

The presentation of the Sustainability Report of Bio Food Products is a firm step for the collaboration between the private sector and the government in facing up to the challenges of the environment.

With such initiatives in place, Kenya is moving in the right direction toward more sustainable practices that will see not only economic benefits but also resource protection for future generations.
