Mombasa governor Abdulswamad Nassir has today distributed bursaries worth Sh63.7 million to needy secondary and university students in the county.

Nassir said that the bursaries will be distributed to 30 wards in Mombasa County in a bid to enable students who are struggling with school fees to remain in school.

He noted that his government is committed to uplift the lives of the youths in the region by supporting their education.

Mombasa county assembly speaker Arub Khatr lauded the governor for prioritising education matters and assured him of the assembly’s support.

Khatr hinted that in the budget presented to the MCAs, Elimu fund, a kitty for sponsoring education in the county has been given a larger allocation.

“This has shown us the dedication the governor has in uplifting the lives of our youth by improving their academic performance,” he said.

According to the governor the county budget for the year 2023/2024 that is yet to be passed by the county assembly will be people-focused.

He said the budget will finance community-related projects including the unveiling of the Mombasa Youth service which will see youths going through disciplined training before they are engaged and recruited.

Other programmes which will be financed include expanding the Mombasa Yangu recruitment initiative, airlifting youths for employment abroad, skills mitaani recruitment programme, SME loans to women, NHIF comprehensive Cover, ECDE feeding programme, and school holidays motivational scheme among others.

“I want to bring a change from what has been happening by ensuring we take education of our young generation with seriousness. I promise to deliver through actions and not just mere words,” he said.

He appealed to parents in the county not to allow their children to drop out of school noting that his government has made it a commitment to prioritise education.
