Mumias East MP Peter Salasya was on Friday arrested over allegations of assaulting a local politician during a funeral held in Kakamega County.
Salsya has however been released on a Ksh. 50,000 bail following his apprehension.
The MP is set to faces charges of assault, causing physical harm and creating a disturbance in a way that could lead to a breach of peace.
A video circulating online captured the MP adressing residents during a funeral event on Friday.
Minutes into his address, Salsaya's attention shifts to an individual outside the camera’s field of view whom the legislator repeatedly implores to sit down so that he can continue with his address.
Despite Salasya’s instructions, the man, who sources indicate was an area MCA seeking to address the gathering, fails to comply, prompting the MP to dramatically slap him in broad daylight.
Salaysa’s security detail are then seen to interven escorting the man from the podium.
According to the police, two of his security personnel allegedly fired shots into the air during the incident.
Meanwhile, Salasya who addressed the media shortly after his release, distanced himself from the allegations terming them as propaganda.
"I Peter Salasya want to categorically state that I didn't slap anyone. The MCA is the one who brought his cheek where my swinging hand was.
The contact between my hand and his cheeks is said to have produced a sharp sound. I don't remember assaulting anyone. Treat it as propaganda."Salasya said.
Many on social media have since criticized the Mp for the act.
Salasya is set to be arraigned in court on Tuesday, January 16.
