NCIC calls for Ruto, Raila dialogue
By Peter Ochieng
The National Cohesion and Intergration Commission (NCIC) wants President William Ruto and Azimio leader Raila Odinga to dialogue for the sake of unity in the country.
NCIC in a press statement read by deputy chairperson Wambui Nyutu on Friday, said it was unfortunate that the Wednesday demos called by opposition led to loss of lives and mass destruction of public and private property in most parts of the country.
NCIC says the trend of violent protests will stop, the moment Ruto and Raila decide to give dialogue a chance.
"We urge the H.E. President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander of Defense Forces, Dr. William Samoei Ruto EGH, and the Azimio Principle Rt. Hon Raila Amolo Odinga to reconsider dialogue in addressing the issues ailing the Country," Nyutu said.
"We urge them to reactivate the bipartisan parliamentary committee to address these issues. We believe that the solution shall be arrived at amicably."
Issues raised by Odinga in his call for demos include lowering of the cost of living.
NCIC notes that most Kenyans are struggling economically, but insists that demos will not provide a solution.
"While it is true that the cost of living is becoming strenuous for many Kenyans, the solution is not violence and anarchy. Consequently, we are urging Kenyans to give dialogue a chance."
NCIC says that unfortunately, the demonstrations have degenerated into tribal conflict, especially in Sondu, the border of Kisumu and Kericho counties.
Several people have died or injured due to the conflict since Wednesday.
Similarly, NCIC holds the view that terrorist are taking advantage of lack of unity in the country, to stage terrorists attacks in counties such as Lamu and Mandera.
"There is an upsurge of terrorist attacks, particularly in Mandera, Lamu and Wajir counties. The terrorists are taking advantage of the ongoing situation in Kenya."
The commission called for unity among political leaders, to avert further attacks.
