The National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) has launched a 3 days free medical camp in Bungoma county for new registrations, and to offer free medical services.

According to Valentine Morogo, the NHIF Regional Manager, Western region, the move is part of their Community Social Responsibility (CSR) activities.

Addressing the press, Morogo said that the same medical camp was also going on in Vihiga.

“We are conducting registration of new NHIF members and responding to any inquiries from the members of the fund and the public," Morogo said.

Morogo said that they had partnered with Bungoma referral hospital and will offer free medical services during the camp such as screening of cervical and prostate cancer.

She called on the residents of Bungoma to turn out and register as NHIF members or activate their cards as members.

“I am very optimistic that after the camp the turn out will be big and we will create a positive impact towards supporting the universal health care program,” she said.

Bungoma County Referral Hospital Deputy nursing officer Grace Wanjiru asked NHIF to reduce the 60 days that patients have to wait after making payments so that they can get treatment promptly.

Judith Wabwile, a patient from Musikoma who activated her NHIF card said that the activation process was quick and easy.

“I am here to activate my NHIF card because recently my neighbor got ill and the hospital bill was high but due to lack of NHIF cover she had to have a fundraising to settle the bill," Judith said.

Augustine Keya, a boda-boda rider, said he took the cover and has been paying the monthly subscription.

“When I heard of NHIF from friends and the media I registered and up to date it is helpful to my family and I," he said.

He said that he has a family of five and the NHIF takes care of their hospital bills without any difficulties.

The County Commissioner, Thomas Sankei commended NHIF for the move

He said the process was helpful to the county health sector in terms of awareness.

“I urge people to turn up in large numbers and be part of the NHIF solution to their health,"Sankei said.
