Administrators in Maina village on the outskirts of Nyahururu town have destroyed over 10000 litres of illicit brew.
In an intelligence-based raid to a homestead in the village, led by Nyahururu Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) Muthike Ndambuki, the administrators raided a home with drums containing the alcohol buried underground.
The home had three rooms all of which had holes dug in them and drums of over 250 litres each buried in the ground.
The drums had raw brew locally identified as kangara that would eventually be used to brew chang’aa.
The administrators also destroyed by pouring, 20 litres of chang’aa that were set to be transported and distributed to retailers.
The DCC condemned those making the illicit brew and said that their days are numbered. He instead asked them to venture into other businesses saying their illicit brew business will not survive under his watch.
He also urged the residents to be sharing timely information with the administrators saying that the war against illicit brews needed concerted efforts to be won.
“We have destroyed raw illicit brew which was around 10000 litres. We need to encourage our people to start engaging in other income generating activities because this business is making our children stop going to school. It has also made our youths lazy,” he noted.
“It is not the government alone to fight this menace, we need to join hands. Brief us when you suspect someone is brewing alcohol or peddling any kind of drug. We need to join the resolve of the Deputy President in ensuring we eradicate substance and illicit brews,” said the DCC.
Area chief Muraya Waithaka gave a stern warning to the brewers saying that he will use all the powers bestowed on him by his office to ensure they are driven out of the village.
He at the same time regretted that the same day, people he had arrested in connection to the sale of illicit brew elsewhere in that village had been released the same day on bond. He called for a harsher penalty.
He asked the residents and especially the youths to engage in other money-making ventures and desist from falling into the slavery of alcoholism.
Area residents thanked the administrators and asked the government to re-introduce kazi mtaani saying that during its tenure, many youths had stopped indulging in alcoholism because they were busy.
They blamed idleness and unemployment on the rising consumption of illicit brews.
