In response to the rampant destruction of acacia trees caused by charcoal burning in the Kerio Valley, the Forest Zonal Manager, along with local leaders, has taken a decisive step by implementing a ban on the issuance of tree felling permits.

This move comes after concerns over the unchecked devastation of the valley's vital green cover.

Following an extensive fact-finding mission in the region, conducted by forest officers in collaboration with the zonal manager, Mr. Lewis Obam, it became evident that misleading information was being disseminated regarding the origin of trees used for charcoal production.

In an official statement from his office, Obam expressed his concern over the reckless actions of specific individuals who were disregarding the environmental impact of their activities.

The Kerio Valley, largely characterized by communal landholding and a tradition of shifting cultivation, has been experiencing indiscriminate tree felling, contributing to ecological imbalances.

The consequences of this reckless behavior are not confined solely to environmental repercussions but also impact the livelihoods of pastoralists in the valley who rely on acacia trees for fodder during periods of drought.

Mr. Obam has urged security personnel across various jurisdictions, including Keiyo North Sub County, Pokot, and Baringo, to remain vigilant and apprehend any individuals caught in the act of transporting charcoal. The ban on permits seeks to deter the widespread practice of felling trees for charcoal production, which has been driven by unsustainable demand.

He revealed plans to collaborate with the community in reinforcing environmental conservation efforts and combating the poaching of trees.

These initiatives will involve raising awareness among residents and ensuring effective enforcement of conservation regulations.
