The Anglican Bishop pf Machakos Diocese Bishop Joseph Mutungi has urged couples to formalize their union and take advantage of mass weddings where couples are counselled on how to stay together in marriage.

Bishop Mutungi said some unions which were not formalized in church did not last long because they lacked the right foundation.

While speaking during a mass wedding for seven couples held at the All Saints Kyamwee church in Machakos, the Bishop said that no one should be afraid to wed in church because of expenses yet they could take advantage of mass weddings when available.

He added that marriage is between two people and they don’t need expensive cars and food to marry that is why mass weddings were happening.

“Mass weddings make things financially easy for everyone since they are cheaper and God blesses such unions since they will show a good example to younger couples,” said Bishop Mutungi.

Mutungi noted that a weak marriage represents a weak church so couples should not wait to have money so as to marry but use the mass wedding to make things easier.

Canon Florence Musila who is in charge of All Saints Kyamwee said they were happy to celebrate the love and goodness of God.

Musila said they encouraged mass weddings because they all shared the cost so that one does not get overwhelmed by expenses.

She said they announced and mobilised the mass wedding weeks before so that people would come out in numbers and majority who came were the elderly and a few youth.

“We encourage the church and the young couples to participate in this so that they are able to attract others who have not formalized their union to come forward,” added Canon Musila.

One of the grooms, Mr. Mulwa Waziri, 74, has been living with his wife for 52 years without officiating their marriage but was very happy that the mass wedding has given them a chance to formalize their union.

Mulwa said that even though it has taken them a long time to wed, the youth should wed in church instead of cohabiting.

He added that their 52 year old marriage has had its ups and downs but with communication and forgiveness, they have stood strong and sailed through the puddles together.
