President Ruto trades Kaunda suit for Maasai regalia

By Peter Ochieng

President William Ruto on Tuesday seemingly negotiated a corner from Kaunda suits that have been defining his wardrobe in the recent past.

The Head of State showed up in a Maasai tradional regalia, as he joined Morans in a dance during the Maa Cultural Week at Sekenani Stadium, in Narok County.

Ruto, who was used to suits during his time as Deputy President (DP) seems to have settled on Kaunda, a deviation from the path followed by Kenya's first four presidents.

Last week, the Head of State met US ambassador to Kenya Meg Whitman, while in a Kaunda suit.

The suit has over the years been associated with former Zambia president Kenneth Kaunda.

On Tuesday, he however came out in full Maasai regalia.

He toured the Maasai Mara National Game Reserve, and could be seen standing on one leg alongside Kajiado and Narok governors Joseph Ole Lenku and Patrick Ole Ntutu.

"Our traditions are an integral part of our story. Celebrating our rich culture brings Kenyans from diverse backgrounds together," said the Head of State.

He said the rich Maasai culture is the push behind tourism in Narok and Kajiado counties.

"The authenticity of this culture is the foundation of cultural tourism."

Governor Ntutu revealed the experience he had with the president.

"Earlier, along with governors Joseph Ole Lenku of Kajiado and Jonathan Lelelit of Samburu County, we warmly welcomed His Excellency Dr. William Samoei Ruto the President of Kenya, to the Maasai Mara National Reserve. We took a game drive, where we had the privilege to witness the wildebeest and experience the incredible wildlife in this unique landscape," said the first term governor.

"During our visit, I had the opportunity to share with the President the conservation plans that Narok County has diligently put in place to ensure the preservation of the Mara for the benefit of future generations. He has assured me of support in the conservation efforts of the Maasai Mara National Reserve."

Some Kenyans, the likes of Alinur Mohamed said the president looked amazing.

"Just seen these photos on the WhatsApp stories of President William Ruto, where he is enjoying a game drive in Maasai Mara National Reserve after attending the Maa Cultural Festival in Maaasai Mara, Narok County. I need such an outfit where can I get one?"

He requested to be linked up with sellers.
