Businesses came to standstill in Maua town after hundreds residents of Athiru Gaiti in Igembe South sub-county staged a protest over poor state of roads in the area.

The angry residents took to the streets for the second time to express their frustration over failure by a contractor to complete Maua-Athiru Gaiti -National Park Road, while accusing the area MP John Paul Mwirigi of offering lip services to their concerns.

The protestors blocked Maua-Meru road and paralyzed businesses within the town, accusing national government of ignoring their plight.

They barricaded the highway with tyres to register their displeasure, while blocking motorists plying the route.

They further lamented that neglect of the road had led to immense suffering for the last two weeks, due to heavy rains being experienced in the area, which has left the road impassable.

They decried that they have been unable to transport miraa to the Maua market since the onset of the heavy rains.

The demonstrators engaged police in a running battle as they chanted their displeasure with the national government for the poor state of the road.

However, Geoffrey Mureti, a butchery owner in Maua town expressed his dissatisfaction with the demos saying he had recorded low sales for lack of customers, owing to inconveniences brought about by barricading of the road.
