Technical, Vocational Education and Training (TVET) PS Dr. Esther Thaara has underscored the importance of technological development and innovation saying it remains a strong driving force in the quest for sustainable development for the future
Speaking during inauguration of an International Research Conference at the Kisii National Polytechnic, Thaara said only science technology and innovation will unlock the transformative power required to address global challenges of food insecurity, youth unemployment, climate change, scarcity of resources and diseases among others.
“I am glad to see good innovations like cabro works and flour made out of arrow roots plants mixed with groundnuts, which if up scaled can propel Kenya to a developed healthy nation,” she said.
Noting that Technology acts as a bridge that connects scientific innovations to practical applications to enable creation of sustainable solutions, the PS urged the youth to embrace skills in technology for sustainable development.
Thaara said that TVET institutions were the core to secure the country’s development, adding that the country was currently in the process of implementing a new curriculum competency based training, aimed at producing graduates who are competent enough for local, regional and international market.
Civil and building engineering technology, she said, was some of the many courses offered by most TVET institutions to equip the youth with skills.
“I would really wish to see employable youths in this region fully equipped with various skills,” Thaara said.
Meanwhile, in a bid to offer greener pastures for young graduates from the TVET institutions, the PS said the ministry had partnered with the international world to acquire jobs abroad.
