Public Health Practitioners seek their union’s registration

Public Health Practitioners Union (PHPU) and Kenya Environmental Health (KEH) on Monday asked the Registrar of Trade Unions to provide their union with a certificate at Milimani Labour Relations Court.

This follows a court ruling touching on the registration of the public health union which was passed in favour of the union last year November.

In his speech, the Secretary General Kenya Environmental Health and Public Health Practitioners Union Mr. Brown Ashila said that the Office of the Registrar of Trade Unions has blatantly disregarded the court orders and this has prevented them from exercising their rights and work as professionals. 

“In November 2022, the court ordered for the registration of Kenya Environmental Health and Public Health Practitioners Union to advocate for the rights and the working conditions of public health officers and technicians,” reiterated Ashila.

The unions intend to commence peaceful protest in the course of the week if the registrar of Trade unions continued to dishonour the court orders.

The Secretary General also stated that the Registrar has 48 hours to release the certificate.

“We will hold demonstrations at the office of the Ministry of Labour, Social Security and Services if our certificate is not handed to us within 48 hours,” said the secretary General.

The union has also complained to the government regarding shortage of public health officers. This, they say, has led to an increase in the number of health issues that have been arising. An example is the poisoning in schools like Mukumu Girls High School.
