Religious leaders and business community decry increased incidents of insecurity

Traders and religious leaders in Narok South Sub County have raised concern over a recent trend of insecurity where church leaders and business people are being attacked in their homes by unknown people.

This is after a number of pastors and traders were attacked and threatened at their homes during night hours by a gang of armed criminals.

The recent incident happened last night where a Full Gospel Churches of Kenya Pastor Joseph Kirui’s house was broken into by a gang of eight thugs who cut his wife’s right hand and transferred Sh. 13, 500 from the pastor’s phone.

“It happened that my wife heard commotion outside our house when we were sleeping at around 2am. When she woke up, she found the thugs had cut the window grills and entered the house. She started screaming but one of the thugs cut her hand,” lamented Pastor Kirui.

Pastor Kirui who spoke to the media after the incident recalled how he escaped death narrowly as the gang had threatened to kill him if he did not give out all the money he had in the house.

“It was a horrible night. The gang forced me to give them all the money I had. Lucky enough, I do not keep money in the house. However, they transferred some Sh. 13, 500 that was in my M-Pesa account,” he said.

The thugs, he said, were armed with a gun, pangas, machete and rungus, dressed in black leather attires and referring to each other as ‘afande’.

When they realized I had alerted the police through my mobile phone, they tied my hands and took me to a bush, almost one kilometer from my house where they forced me to give them my M-banking details.

Miraculously, he said, his mobile phone went off, not to open again. In the process, police arrived and all the eight criminals took off into the bush.

The incident comes only a fortnight after Narok County Interdenominational Chairperson Bishop Peter Nakola was attacked by a gang of criminals at his home in the same estate.

The criminals injured his last born son and escaped after neighbours responded to the screams in the compound.

Traders too have not been spared as a prominent hotelier and Nyumba Kumi member Mary Mai was attacked a few days ago while in her house by unknown people.

Pastor Fredrick Lemama of Covenant Church International asked the Criminal Investigation Officers to leave no stone unturned until the perpetrators of the crime are arrested.

Narok South Sub County Police Commander Isaac Omare confirmed that they have credible evidence that will lead to the arrest of the culprits though no person has been arrested so far.
