By Albert Amenya a.k.a The Banana Peddler Death is an existential mystery that humanity cannot demystify. When it creeps in, it saunters and snatches a beloved one as the family mourns while gnashing teeth. The only consolation is that when death unloads the loved one, the dead one can no longer be a victim of death. One year ago, the people of the United Republic of Tanzania and Africa lost their great son President Dr. John Pombe Joseph Magufuli. The shock and sad news of the demise of President Magufuli was existentially painful. His death stunned us like a stun gun. Magufuli was a man of impeccable character that you’ll not love to hate. The former Tanzanian President epitomized the dignity and respect a great leader should command. He was a tireless man who discomforted himself for the sake of Tanzanians. He will go down in the books of history as one of the most popular personalities in Tanzania. Love him or hate him, he remains Magufuli. Magufuli was an anti-corruption crusader. He hated corruption. He fought for the progress of his country. He often took on both the high and mighty if he found out that those assigned official duties have caught the bug of corruption. He always voiced his opinion freely. He always strived to get his facts right before firing anyone. His actions were always incomplete without buttressing them with tangible facts. He taught Nigerians to cut their coats according to their cloths. He educated them on how to live within their income. His administration taught Tanzanians the importance of having fewer kids and living in homes they could afford, drive the cars they can maintain, travel only when there is need, not want, drink smart, eat smart and send their kids to the schools they can afford. As a result, Tanzanians were happy. Africa has lost one of her greatest leaders. To our brothers and sisters in Tanzania, the world shares from your agony following the untimely death of your beloved President. As your President joins his totemic home where he will suffer no more, East Africa celebrates his accomplishments as a man who cemented the harmonious relationship the people of East African Community. The late Dr. Magufuli will go down as one of the most fearless sons of Africa because he was too determined to be defeated and too optimistic to be fearful. Unlike other African leaders, Dr. Pombe surrounded himself with creative think tanks and a well-oiled political machine that destroyed anyone who dared come its way. Pombe will be remembered for his bravery of calling a spade a spade. He always nurtured his conscience with truth and cared about his character assailants. President Magufuli ran a state with a trademark of excellence. Under Magufuli, Tanzania was not only the Centre of Excellence; it equally exported excellence to all corners of the earth. President Magufuli’s courageous traits confirms that he was better qualified and in the mould of Nelson Mandela, Charles de Gaulle, Dwight D. Eisenhower, and Julius Sankara.  He will be remembered as the man who rescued his nation from corruption and perpetual economic malfeasance. To Tanzanians, President Magufuli was an icon of inspiration and an all-encompassing man who only understood the language of peace. Having followed this man from the inception of his Presidency, I can attest that his decorum and disposition was worth mirroring. President JPJ Magufuli was a well-read, astute and intelligent in his presidential mandate. It is unheard of some Africans who display the sense of anathema by propagating premeditated monstrous lethal lies that Magufuli was a despot. Their actions are highly condemnable. Thousands of Tanzanians who came out to mourn President buttress the fact that Magufuli stood tall like the rock of Gibraltar. He displayed a befitting maturity and always exhibited sterling presidential qualities by keeping mum of his character assailants’ abusive personas. Pombe’s character showed a disciplined leader with a highly commendable fertile mind. He was firm, fair and consistent despite all odds. With his dint of hard work, he was a prototypical strongman that solved Tanzania’s mundane problems. He was a statesman and a patriot whose unscathed persona was worthy felicitating. He’ll be remembered as the man who fought for the rights of the dehumanized deprived and voiceless Tanzanians. Tanzanians will remember Dr. Pombe Magufuli as a man who embarked on a unique journey to become a giant of history for Tanzania and an exceptional African statesman. His road to glory was rough but as a victorious warrior with the people as his ambassadors, his victory was assured. To Tanzanians, Magufuli was and will always be an icon of inspiration, a shining light and a mirror to the core values that Tanzanians believe in. He was the beckon of hope to millions of Tanzanians and a perfect example to power-hungry African leaders. He was a forward looking man with a pedigree of vision, courage, dependability, proactiveness and a shrewd manager. He single-handedly returned Tanzania to the path of progress and good governance, accountability and transparency. As we celebrate the inconvenient demise of President Magufuli, we pray that the almighty God grant Tanzanians the fortitude to bear their irreparable loss. Fare thee well Pombe.
