Senate committee to probe William Oduol's impeachment

An 11-member special Senate committee has been formed to investigate the impeachment of Siaya deputy governor, William Oduol.

The embattled deputy county boss was impeached on 8th June, 2023.

This is after 42 Siaya County Assembly Members (MCAs) adopted a report of the special committee that was established to investigate the grounds of his impeachment.

On 10th June, 2023, Senate Speaker Amason Jeffa Kingi received a letter from his Siaya County Assembly counterpart George Okode, communicating the MCAs decision against the deputy governor.

The select Senate committee comprises of Miraj Abdullahi Abdulrahman (Nominated), Erick Okong’o Omogeni (Nyamira), Catherine Mumma (Nominated), Daniel Maanzo (Makueni), Betty Batuli Montet (Nominated), and Richard Onyonka (Kisii).

Other Senators are William Kipkemoi Kisang’ (Elgeyo Marakwet), Abass Sheikh Mohamed (Wajir), Mwenda Gataya (Tharaka Nithi), Tabitha Mutinda Munene (Nominated) and Raphael Chimera Mwinzagu (Nominated).

Kingi directed the committee to report back to the Senate within 10 days, with its findings on whether or not the allegations levelled against Oduol for his removal were substantiated.

MCAs accused Oduol of among others, being a dishonest leader.

Trouble started about three months ago, when the deputy governor accused governor James Orengo of corruption and misuse of public resources.

Oduol has maintained, in the face of the impeachment proceedings against him, that he will continue pushing for prudent use of public resources.

His hope is that the Senate overturns MCAs move to impeach him.
