Several families in a village in Ndhiwa Sub County are counting losses after a storm destroyed their houses and crops.
Lower Kwandiku Sub Location Assistant Chief Samuel Opiyo said the residents of Nyamusi village incurred heavy losses following strong winds and hailstorms last evening.
The incident left three families homeless after their houses were destroyed.
Opiyo said the homestead of former councilor Odingo Ngoro was among those affected after a big tree fell on a house making it uninhabitable.
Similar damages affected two other homesteads where the roofs of houses were blown off by the wind.
The winds also blew off the rooftop of Ana Roho Israel Church.
Opiyo confirmed that there were no injuries during the incident.
He said the families were in dire need of humanitarian aid.
“The families need urgent humanitarian aid. They need assistance from the county disaster management and other humanitarian agencies,” Opiyo said.
He expressed concerns that the incident was going to cause a food shortage in the area after it destroyed crops such as maize, beans, bananas, and avocado on the farms.
“Our farmers are also staring at huge losses because their crops have been destroyed by the hailstones and wind,” Opiyo said.
