A young man from Emanda village in Vihiga Sub County Mr. Clive Angwenyi, 22 has set an example for many with his devoted use of eco-friendly energy sources in bio-gas and has made a name for himself as a pioneer in using renewable energy in the area.
Unlike most people in his community who rely on electricity and gas as primary sources of energy, Angwenyi decided to embrace bio-gas as his main source of energy, with impressive results.
Angwenyi revealed that bio-gas is a type of renewable energy that is derived from organic waste such as animal manure, kitchen waste, and sewage, among others.
He added that the bio-degradable matter is usually broken down through a process known as anaerobic digestion, which produces a mixture of methane gas and carbon dioxide and in turn the resulting gas can be used to power generators, stoves, and other appliances.
The 22-year-old man set up a bio-gas system in his backyard, which includes a large biogas digester, a gas storage tank, and a gas stove. He uses the system to power his home, heat water, and cook meals, among other things.
“The beauty of bio-gas is that it is a cheap, renewable, and environment friendly source of energy,” stated Angwenyi. “Instead of relying on expensive fossil fuels, we can use our waste to create energy that can power our homes and businesses,” he added.
He revealed that his bio-gas system has not only helped him save money on energy bills but has also reduced his environmental footprint by recycling organic waste that would have otherwise have ended up in landfills.
“It is reducing greenhouse gas emissions and preserving the environment,” he said.
The environmentalist’s innovative approach has gained attention from his community, with many people curious about his system. He said that he has organized several workshops to teach people about bio-gas and how it can change their lives.
“I am happy to see people taking an interest in renewable energy and realizing that they can get energy from their waste,” stated Angwenyi. "Becoming energy independent is not only good for the environment but also for our wallets," he added, saying "We have the power to change the world, one kilowatt-hour at a time."
“In addition to saving money, using bio-gas as a primary source of energy can be beneficial in various ways. The practice can directly help to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, offering an easy way for industries to become more sustainable. Additionally, it can be used to increase energy reliability, especially in remote or rural areas where traditional power grid connections are not accessible,” he stated.
Angwenyi’s bio-gas success story offers a glimpse of how communities can become energy independent by embracing renewable energy. With a small investment of time and money, anyone can follow in his footsteps and set up a bio-gas system that meets their energy needs
