Culture and the youth play a pivotal role in steering the future of the East Africa region, Mombasa CECM for Tourism, Culture, and Trade Mohammed Osman has said.

Osman highlighted the centrality of culture in people's lives and its far-reaching influence on various facets.

“Culture occupies the foremost position in an individual's life. It transcends individual boundaries and extends its influence into the realms of corporates, social groups, and governmental entities, each presenting unique facets of culture,” said Osman at the Swahilipot Hub.

He accentuated the importance of preserving and promoting a culture firmly rooted in the lives and locals of Kenya's coastal region.

“It is the people and places along the Kenyan coast that imbue it with a distinctive character, which has brought us together today,” said Osman.

“Even as we discuss young people gaining access to economic opportunities, it is imperative to recognise the need for the requisite expertise to harness these prospects,” he added.

On culture and heritage entrepreneurship, Osman encouraged the fusion of passion and business acumen.

“Comprehending and cherishing a pursuit endows one with greater resilience and a profound sense of fulfilment,” he said.

Youths were urged to reconnect with their cultural roots in order to understand their origins, identity, and aspirations.

Events like the Pwani Innovation Week, Osman said, serve as catalysts to dispel negativity about Mombasa which has a rich cultural tapestry.

Osman expressed his admiration for the young innovators and mentors at Swahilipot Hub, urging them to continue with their positive contributions to the community.

“The task of constructing an event from its embryonic stage and witnessing its growth over four years is no small achievement. It serves as an embodiment of the unyielding commitment, dedication, and fervour exhibited by the team responsible for its realisation,” he said.

The Pwani Innovation Week is poised to proceed with a myriad of activities and dialogues, delving into the realms of innovation, culture, and the empowerment of youth in Kenya's coastal precincts.
