Brenda Chebet, a standard eight candidate from Kisonei Primary school, Tenges ward Baringo Central sub-county could not hide her joy at a celebration held at her home after being awarded ‘Best Girl of Tournament’ during the just concluded national primary schools athletics championships held at Narok County.
Brenda Chebet, a 14-year-old from a humble background together with her parents Mr and Mrs Jackson Tanui, Area Member of County Assembly Henry Kigen together with friends could not hide their delight as they congratulated the young girl for the brilliant performance on Wednesday.
Chebet emerged top position in discus, fourth position in both javelins and short-put sports at the national levels championships after emerging first position in all three sports to represent the Rift Valley Region and qualifying for the national competitions.
“I am very excited having reached the finals and attaining the medal for Best Girl of the Tournament. I would like to thank my parents for the support, teacher Fancy Kendagor, my teacher and coach Geoffrey Kiptala for the rigorous training that led me to emerge victorious,” she said.
During her homecoming celebrations, Kigen said the win was a boost for the entire county as there was more talent to be nurtured, urging support from the national and county government to discover these talents.
“We want to congratulate Chebet for representing us well but we need talents to be uplifted by coming up with more training camps and providing financial support for talent sustainability since coaches and students need equipment and facilitation,” Kigen said.
Couch Kiptala reiterated the MCAs sentiments noting that the county was disadvantaged compared to other counties that had well equipped facilities and training camps hence it was an uphill task to compete with them but congratulated Chebet for her commitment and well-deserved victory.
