5,000 households benefit from certified seeds

At least 5,000 vulnerable households in Makueni County have received a total of 24 metric tonnes of certified seed to plant during October, November and December El Nino rains.
3,500 households from Mbooni, Kako -Waia, Mbitini and Kasekeu wards will receive maize (DK series), beans and cowpeas of certified seed courtesy of the county government.
While 1,500 targeted vulnerable households in Masongaleni, Nthange, Ivingoni/Nzambani and Mtito Andei in Kibwezi East Subcounty where each farmer will receive 4kgs of maize and 2kgs of green grams donated by Red Cross.
“Today we have received nine metric tonnes of seeds from Makueni Red Cross comprising of six metric tonnes of maize and three metric tonnes of green grams in Kibwezi East Subcounty,” said Executive Committee Member (ECM) for Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock Joyce Mutua while flagging off the seed outside the Governor’s office on Wednesday.
She revealed the areas targeted had received little rains last season while adding that the seeds variety supplied grow well and farmers expect bumper harvest during the anticipated El Nino rains in the area.
“The seed varieties grow well in that area and with anticipated El Nino rains, we are expecting a bumper harvest to boost food security in the area,” she affirmed.
The ECM said the distribution of seed was being carried out the targeted 11 wards simultaneously.
Mutua further said that the county government has also distributed pasture and fodder seeds to farmers in dry regions and wet areas to improve access to animal feed.
