Authorities in Laikipia County have impounded cannabis sativa (bhang) estimated to have a street value of Sh. 600,000 and arrested the suspected dealer.
Laikipia county commissioner Joseph Kanyiri speaking to the press on Thursday, said they arrested the suspect identified as Kelvin Macharia Ngathia through a sting operation who later led the police officers to his rented house in Muthaiga Estate where the narcotics were hidden.
“We have arrested one gentleman identified as Kelvin with 583 rolls of Bhang. The matter is being processed for subsequent court action. This is what is ruining the lives of young men in Laikipia,” said Kanyiri.
Kanyiri said the suspect who was being held at Nanyuki police station would face charges at the court of law aimed at punishing those who are peddling drugs in the county.
The county administrator pointed out that the major crackdown on drugs and illicit brews in the region was being carried out through a multi-agency approach targeting to weed out all rogue individuals involved in illegal business.
“Through the joint effort, we have managed to confiscate assorted second-generation alcohol in cartons which were being offered to our youth and the amount we have impounded shows the proliferation of counterfeit drugs. We regret that this is harming the health of our youths to an extent some have become like zombies ,” said Kanyiri.
“We want to urge them if they must take alcohol, to use genuine beer and from known outlets to avoid risking their lives,” cautioned the county commissioner.
He noted the government would not relent until sobriety was restored and those involved punished severel
At the same time, Kanyiri said that they were regulating bar and liquor business ownership in the county to tame widespread alcohol usage among the youngsters.
He advised those involved in the illegal drug selling businesses to find alternative ways of livelihood before the law caught up with them.
