A section of Churches in the country have called upon the actors in the Bi-Partisan talks to continue with the process till the end of the agreed period and come up with a people oriented solution.
The churches that included the National Council of churches in Kenya, Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops and the Supreme Council of Kenya in Nairobi Region singled out the recruitment of the Commissioners for the Independent Electoral and Boundaries (IEBC) as an urgent issue that needs to be facilitated.
They noted that the commencement and progress made by the National Dialogue Committee despite emerging hiccups, has given the country hope and brought an end to the demonstrations witnessed in Nairobi County earlier in the year.
The church made the remarks during a forum to assess the state of the nation and to make recommendation for peace, cohesion and well-being of the people that was held at Ufungamano House in Nairobi.
“Without a properly constituted IEBC, we as a nation will get into a constitutional crisis if the boundaries review process is not completed within the stipulated timeliness, a predicament we need to avoid,’’ they said.
In a press statement sent to newsrooms, the church leaders also encouraged County governors to embrace dialogue and consultations, saying that the move will end the constant tussles with members of County Assemblies and enable the counties safeguard service delivery.
They also urged both the county and national government to engage the citizenry in public participation on issues development.
On the high cost of living, the religious faith leaders, said there is need for public discourse on measures to end corruption which has permeated every sector in the country.
“We commend the people of Nairobi and Kiambu Counties for upholding peace and cohesion,” they said, adding “We encourage you to continue building on your resilience to environmental and social-political shocks so that we can live out the aspirations of our national anthem.”
