Bunyala West MCA face defilement charge

Bunyala West Member of the County Assembly Carlbenz Okonya was Tuesday arraigned in Busia magistrate’s court for allegedly defiling a 14-year-old form 1 girl.

Appearing before Chief Magistrate Edna Nyaloti, the Busia county Assembly legislature denied the two charges and was remanded at Korinda GK prison pending a court ruling for the bond application tomorrow.

Efforts by the defense counsel to obtain cash bail and bond were declined by the court for fear of the witnesses’ security.

 The MCA was arrested on Friday last week in Bunyala Sub-county and placed in the custody of officers at the Port Victoria Police Station.

 According to the DPP, the prosecution led by Faith Kaberia and Abraham Mumo had sought orders to detain the suspect for 14 days and opposed bail and bond requests citing witness interference.
