Call for a directorate to oversee the registration of churches

Bungoma county interdenominational churches have asked the government to form a directorate that will oversee and regulate the registration of new churches.

The religious leaders on Tuesday, convened at Kibabii University to share their views with the taskforce elected by the president on the campaign against rogue churches.

Bishop Calistus Barasa, the county chaplain said that the formation of a directorate would help in registration of new churches the legal way.

Barasa stated that religious leaders should not use the freedom of worship to mislead believers.

The chairman of the taskforce, Bishop Mark Kariuki, urged Kenyans not to associate all churches with the Shakahola incident.

He however said that those who abuse the freedom of worship should face the law. 

He promised Kenyans that after collecting views from the 47 counties, the taskforce will prepare a report which will be presented to the President.

Bungoma County Police Commander, Francis Kooli, said the county has over 4000 churches.

Kooli urged churches to operate within stipulated laws adding that no church will be allowed to operate freely without full compliance of the law.
