The car wash industry in Maua Town, Meru County, is showing remarkable resilience even as businesses across various sectors grappled with the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the rising costs of living.

The town has experienced a surge in car ownership over the past few years. This increase in the number of vehicles on the roads has translated into a golden opportunity for car wash operators. Local entrepreneurs are capitalizing on this trend, offering a range of car cleaning services to meet the diverse needs of their customers.

Local car wash businesses have responded by diversifying their offerings. From basic exterior cleaning to full detailing services, Maua's car wash establishments provide options that cater to all budgets and preferences. The competitive pricing and quality of service have earned these businesses a loyal customer base.

Speaking to KNA Tuesday at his premises, one car wash dealer Mr. Kelvin Kimathi acknowldges that being a car wash cleaner in Maua Town, a common theme that emerges is adaptability.

“Many entrepreneurs have invested in modern equipment and eco-friendly cleaning solutions, aligning with the global trend toward sustainability. This forward-thinking approach not only attracts environmentally conscious customers but also keeps operational costs in check,” he said.

Kimathi said that the charges depend on the size and the type of vehicle. ''A lorry is charged Sh400, a 14 sitter Nissan Sh300, saloon car Sh200 and a motorbike Sh100,' he noted.

He added that the venture has been his only source of livelihood and on a busy day especially during weekends, he makes up to Sh4000 as profit.

Despite the positive outlook, Kimathi maintained that shortage in water supply, occasional power outages, and the rising cost of cleaning supplies pose challenges to their operations.
