Members of Kirinyaga County Assembly (MCAs) have passed the much awaited Kirinyaga County Climate Change Bill, 2023.
The law is being enacted at a time when the nation is experiencing unprecedented effects of global warming. It aims to establish a framework and procedures for stakeholders to be mobilized to successfully respond to climate change.
The bill proposes planning committees be constituted and charged with the responsibility of encouraging ward-level public education and awareness on climate change.
It also calls for the establishment of a climate change directorate, whose director will be chosen through a competitive process by the County Public Service Board.
Murinduko Ward MCA Charles Nyamu stated that if it becomes law, the bill will mobilize people who suffer harm from climate change.
