A dormitory hosting 60 boys at Emurua Dikirr Secondary School in Trans Mara East Sub County went up in flames destroying property worth thousands of shillings.
The area Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) Caxton Mayabi said the fire started when the students were in the classrooms for the morning preps and spread very fast destroying the mattresses and student belongings.
Mayabi said the Board of Management has been forced to close the school indefinitely to pave way for investigations as the students also recover from the trauma of losing their belongings.
“Most students are still in shock as they have lost all their personal belongings in school. We will give them time to go home and heal as we organize how to get new beddings for the affected students,” he said.
Lucky enough, he said, no person was injured in the morning incident as all the students were in class.
“We suspect that the fire was caused by an electrical fault. However, we will carry out thorough investigations to ascertain the cause of the fire,” he said.
