Two people in Narok North Sub County have dedicated their lives to planting trees with a target of planting over half a million trees by 2024.

The two, Timothy Maita and Faith Maiyio have combined their effort to plant trees across the county with their main target being schools, where the pupils are responsible to tender the seedlings.

The two started the drive early this year in the Mau-Narok region and have since planted over 30, 000 tree seedlings in various primary schools.

Maita who spoke to KNA said they started the drive to conserve the environment and help achieve the presidential directive of planting 15 billion seedlings in the country by 2032.

“We started this drive on our own. We have been able to buy seedlings and facilitate our own transport from one place to another,” said Maita, adding that they encourage the young learners to plant more trees in their homesteads.

He urged residents to plant as many trees as possible, especially this season that the weather man has predicted a prolonged rainy season.

“Trees come with many benefits. Apart from conserving the environment, one can get fruits, firewood, timber, posts and shade from trees,” he said.

On her part, Ms Mayio revealed planting trees is her childhood passion saying she gets perturbed when she sees people cutting trees in large numbers without replacing them.

Ms. Mayio said they purchase a seedling at a cost of Sh. 20 from individuals or institutions.

The trees planting drive is dubbed Kuza Miti Africa and hopes to recruit many other like–minded members so as to achieve their target.

Narok County Commissioner Isaac Masinde confirmed the county has planted over 4 million trees at the Maasai Mau forest in addition to other seedlings planted in institutions like schools, hospitals and government offices.
